Today was the last day of Week 3. Today I also had my mentor meeting with Mr. H. In the meeting we discussed about how I can present my research on exhibition. Mr. H said that maybe I could interview some people who work to care for animals. He sent me some links too. Here they are: https://www.jakartaanimalaid.com/reporting-animal-cruelty/ www.orangutans.com.au/?gclid=CjwKCAiA7t3yBRADEiwA4GFlIxqWXpVW-KQH0GPUJtAKdfX4D0176--B1j0uHrGNNwvPb4O77UD_oRoC3DYQAvD_BwE Mr. H said I can interview the people who work in those companies and record the interviews. So that way I can have the two interviews in one video and people who come to see my presentation can also see the interviews. That’s a pretty good idea and I guess I can do that. 👍🏻 So this whole week we researched quite a lot. We also discussed about our assessment criteria, how we can share our learning etc. We also talked about how our tech, art and writing piece would look like. We are most probably going to talk about our math piece next week. And we also learned how to cite sources. This week I also finished my UNSDG logo. It looks good. But one problem was that I wanted to make it look like it was daytime but I used dark blue for the sky so now it looks like nighttime. Oops... My bad. 😬 But it’s fine. I also watched a video which was quite sad. Here it is: After watching this video I felt so bad for those poor animals. But this is happening in the world and we have to try to stop it. So yeah... Maybe I can show this video too.
So that is all we did this week. BYE!!! 🤗

Today in the morning we discussed about our assessment criteria. We thought of lots of things such as:
- making the presentation fun, interesting and engaging - providing facts that are true - answering questions politely - become an expert on our topic - making sure other people learn from your presentation - make our presentation clear and understandable - make sure visual presentation is clear (images, text, background) - includes specific facts rather than general statements - make it appealing to the audience After discussing that we got some work time. In that time, I continued my research and note-taking. Then after snack Mr. Heri (the librarian) came and taught us about how we can cite sources. In our school library's online catalog, Mr. Heri created a collection of citing websites. Here are the websites Mr. Heri showed us. Click on each one to check them out: - easybib.com - zbib.org - bibme.org - citethisforme.com - citationmachine.net For me, the best one is zbib.org since it is very easy to use. After Mr. Heri, left we got some more work time. I was supposed to have a teacher-student conference with Ms. Kesler but Mariko was still having her meeting. Then Mr. Bowo told everyone, " People who have mentor meeting right now have to go. " So I left. As I reached the lobby, I asked Ms. Mia if Mr. H was in the room. As it turned out he wasn't going to be at school until about 1 pm. So then I went at 2 pm but Mr. H was in a meeting. So tomorrow I'll have to go at 1:30 pm. 😑🙁 After P.E, we came back to class and Ms. Kesler told us that she would be going home because she wasn't feeling well. So now I'll have to meet Ms. Kesler on Monday. OK... So that is it for today. :-> Today I continued my exhibition research. I watched some more videos and I also took more notes. Here’s one video: After watching this video, I was like, " OMG! Is this seriously happening in Indonesia? " Then I was like, " Yes, this is really happening and I need to try to help in stopping it. " I am still thinking about how I can take action, so maybe I could create a petition. Or maybe I could make a poster and ask my parents to post it on Facebook or Instagram. That would work too. So I'm still thinking about it. 🤔 Tomorrow is my Mentor Meeting with Mr. H and also my Teacher-Student Conference with Ms. Kesler. On Monday, we all got this paper with two sides. One side was for our mentor meeting and one was for the teacher-student conference. On the teacher student conference side there were some questions so today I answered them first thing in the morning. Since we had only about four periods in class today I didn't do much but still I got quite a lot of things done. So that ends today's blog.😊 Today we talked about ways to share our learning. We came up with lots of different ideas. Here are some ideas: - show a video - skit/drama - PowerPoint presentation - song - speech/persuasive text - poster - presentation board - movie/clip/documentary - graphs/charts - combination of some ideas That’s a lot of choices. But we don’t have to use all the ways. It’s our choice. But what we have to do is that in our final presentation we must have a mathematical piece, an art piece, a tech piece and a writing piece. Yes, we have a lot to do. Then we continued researching. We were allowed to continue thinking of our Lines of Inquiry and our Central Idea or we could do some research. I continued thinking of my Lines of Inquiry and my Central Idea. This is what I came up with: Lines of Inquiry 1. The causes of animal cruelty. (Causation) 2. How animal cruelty is connected to our life. (Connection) 3. Our responsibility for taking care of animals in need of help. (Responsibility) Central Idea: Animal cruelty can affect the lives of people and animals. It wasn’t easy coming up with all this. But I did it. We also discussed about some research skills. We saw a video about The Big Six. It told about some cool research skills and was very helpful. So today was pretty fun and I got a lot of work done too. 👁👁 👅 Today we discussed about what our Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry would be. We also thought about all the key words related to our issue. Then we wrote/brainstormed our key words in pieces of papers shaped like hexagons. After that we had to put the hexagons together in a way that the words we wrote are similar to each other. If you get what I mean. If not, here is a photo of my thinking: Then we had to think of what our Lines of Inquiry would be. So far, I’ve thought of one Line of Inquiry. It is based on the key concept ‘Perspective’. - How animals feel when they are hurt. I actually don’t think this is a decent Line of Inquiry but Ms. Kesler said to leave it, just in case. So tomorrow I’ll have to think of other Lines of Inquiry and also my Central Idea. Today I also did a reflection of how blogging is going for me. It’s going pretty good but I just want to learn how to add links to my Bibliography page. So I guess we’re going to do a lesson about it sometime this week since a lot of people are trying to figure it out. So that ends today’s blog. 👋🏻 This week we didn’t do much exhibition research. But we still discussed about some exhibition stuff. And we also started our research, we started writing questions, writing notes, keeping our notes organized, meeting our mentors, having our first mentor meeting and things like that. Since we didn’t do much I think we’re going to do to quite a lot next week. 😬 This week was a very busy week as it was Literacy Week so our timetables were filled with activities which we would be doing. It was quite fun and I really enjoyed Literacy Week. So this week I met with Mr. Hutchinson and we didn’t discuss much (as I said in my previous blogpost). So we will be discussing about how I’m going to be presenting on exhibition and what I can do to take action about animal cruelty. So I’ve been thinking about that. I also watched some videos about it. Here are a few:
I watched these videos and then I finally understood about how animals are being made to do things which they aren’t actually supposed to do. I’m actually thinking about showing these videos on my exhibition so people understand what’s going on and think about it. So that’s the end for today. 👋👋 Today we continued our research and note taking. I saw some more videos about animal cruelty and then took some notes. I’ve also been trying to find answers for the questions I’ve written and I’m currently taking notes on the answers.
Then after snack we had and Australian storyteller. And guess what, Mr. Hutchinson was the storyteller. He read a book called Tiddalick The Frog That Caused A Flood. It’s an Aboriginal Dreamtime. It was quite interesting. Then after that we went back to class and did Battle of the Books. Mr. Bowo had made a Kahoot about Freak The Mighty and I got selected! I had the highest points in class with Do Hee in second place and Do Heon in third. I’m so excited for tomorrow because it’s the final of Battle of the Books. After the Battle of the Books I rushed to my mentor meeting as I was running late. Thankfully I reached Mr. Hutchinson’s office on time. Then we discussed about the essential agreements of our meetings and discussed about the questions I had about animal cruelty. After that we discussed ways I could present all my notes and all the research I’ve done abound animal cruelty. We discussed different ways like: - showing people a video - making a model - making posters etc... Then we discussed about how I could take action. I’m still not sure about that and I haven’t thought about that yet since everything is so busy because of Literacy Week. Mr. Hutchinson said that’s fine and so we will discuss that next week. We are most probably going to meet at the same time next week. So this first meeting went pretty well. Then we continued door decorating and we got a lot done. There’s still some white spaces left but we can’t do anything as today was the last day. Then came the spelling bee. I enjoyed it and I got second place. I’m pretty happy. And after the spelling bee we had some silent reading time. So today was an amazing day and I hope tomorrow will be just as amazing. Today we discussed about how we can organize our notes for exhibition. We discussed different ways of organizing our notes like:
- bullet points - color coded - paragraphs - divide main topic into smaller topics etc... Ms. Kesler also made a YouTube playlist for us to watch and she put different videos in the playlist related to our topics. So in the morning we watched the videos and took some notes. Then in Art we continued making our UNSDGs and luckily I didn’t have to think of new logos as Ms. Gita decided the second one was good. Then I drew my final copy and now I just have to paint it. Then after we came back from art we had to make a PicCollage about our topic. So basically, we had to write what our topic is, then we have to add some pictures related to our topic and finally we had to write our name. That’s it. Since Literacy Week is still going on, today we had an Indonesian Drama. I didn’t understand much but at the end they gave a summary of the play in English. It was about a flood. And today was Pajama Day so we also got extra reading time! Yay! So tomorrow is my first “official” mentor meeting with Mr. Hutchinson and I’m 100 percent prepared. Ok. Maybe not 100 percent but you get the point. And tomorrow is also the final of the School Spelling Bee, so I’m hoping to do good. Yay! I’m so excited! Ok, so anyways, that’s it for today. Today we discussed about how we can write questions related to our topic. The questions we wrote were also related to our key concepts. Here are the questions that I wrote so far:
- What can I do to prevent people from killing too many animals? - Why should people not kill too many animals? - How would it feel like if I were the animal being killed? - How is this topic connected to my life? - What rights do people have to kill living animals for festivals? - Why is overfishing bad? - Why do people kill animals? - By how much has the number of the Sumatran Elephant decreased from 2000-2019? I’m still going to write more questions as I haven’t finished yet. But before that we also got to know who our mentors are. And my mentor is.......... Mr. Hutchinson. I was so surprised when Ms. Kesler said that he would be my mentor. But I’m also glad Mr. Hutchinson is my mentor. So anyways, I went to his office today and we scheduled to meet on Thursday. I’m quite excited for our first “official” mentor meeting, so yeah. And then after snack we watched a short video about the UNSDGs and we had to figure out which UNSDG our topic is related to. Since my topic is Animal Cruelty so the UNSDG related to my topic is definitely number 15, Life On Land. Then in Art we had to write key words about our UNSDG and also make some symbols related to the key words. After I had finished doing that, Ms. Gita told me to make some new logos for my UNSDG. So far I’ve made 3 new logos. I don’t really know if I have to make more. If Ms. Gita thinks one of my logos is already good then I don’t have to make anymore and I can start making my final piece. 😀 Today we also continued our door decorating and we also had Mariko’s brother as the Japanese storyteller. The stories were really nice and I enjoyed listening to them. So overall, today was definitely a very great day and I’m very excited for Pj Day tomorrow. Today we discussed about what our topic for exhibition would be. My final topic is Animal Cruelty. We also had to fill in the paper that Ms. Kesler had given us about choosing our topic. There were some questions on it like “ Is this topic related to sharing the planet? “ And so we had to put a tick beside each of the questions if our answer was yes. Then we showed it to Ms. Kesler to approve it.
After Ms. Kesler approved my topic she told me to write some questions I had in mind about animal cruelty. Here are the questions that I wrote: - Why are people so cruel to animals? - Why do some companies kill a thousand cows for a hamburger? - Why do some zoos keep orcas? - Why does Vietnam have/keep a pig slaughter festival? - Why do farmers take care of animals so badly? - Why are animals used for commercials? - Why do people keep exotic animals such as pythons for/as pets? Then we were allowed to do some more research. My dad suggested to use this website for research: PETA I saw a lot of topics about animal cruelty on PETA. It's a really cool website to research about animal cruelty. And since this week is Literacy Week our timetable is quite crowded. I don’t think we will be able to do much exhibition work but it’s fine. And I’m also very excited to know who my mentor for exhibition is going to be. We will get to know tomorrow, so, yay! And that’s it for today... |
